Tobin's Broadway play in running for a Tony award

WRITER Colm Toibin has received a Tony nomination for his play, The Testament of Mary.

The playwright will be vying for the Best Play gong and two production awards.

However news of the nomination was followed closely by confirmation that The Testament of Mary will have its final performance at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre on May 5.

The one-woman show, starring Fiona Shaw and directed by Deborah Warner, will have played 27 previews and 16 performances by the time of closing.

Based on Toibin's novella of the same name, The Testament of Mary tells the unheard story of Mary, mother of Jesus, who is being guarded and protected in Ephesus after the Crucifixion.

This year's nominations were dominated by Matilda The Musical and Kinky Boots.

Matilda, based on the Roald Dahl story, has been transformed into a West End hit; now its transfer to New York has landed 12 chances at the Tonys.

But Kinky Boots, based on the 2005 movie about the real-life tale of a shoe factory that moves into fetish-wear, has gone one better, being shortlisted 13 times.

The awards ceremony takes place at the Radio City Music Hall in New York on June 9.
