Sport stars and TV celebs pay tribute as JFK visit still inspires

TV STARS and sporting legends are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the historic visit of President John F Kennedy to Ireland.

Laura Whitmore, Sharon Corr and rugby star Jamie Heaslip (below) are among the best-known Irish faces paying tribute to the late US President in a new video.

They are joined by Jim Sheridan, Love/Hate's Robert Sheehan, author Roddy Doyle, Riverdance's Moya Doherty and former GAA commentator Michael O Muircheartaigh.

The Late Late Show presenter Ryan Tubridy, author of a book on the JFK visit in 1963, also takes part as does athlete and broadcaster, Mark Pollock.

They each speak part of JFK's speech to the Dail while Laura Whitmore gives her impressions of the effect the visit had on Ireland.

Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Minister Jimmy Deenihan launched a new social media campaign and website celebrating the visit – jfkhomecoming.com invites everyone to upload their own mementoes of the occasion. It will complement a major exhibition which opens in June at the National Library of Ireland.
