COMEDIAN Russell Brand told wife Katy Perry he was divorcing her via a text message.

The revelation comes in an interview Perry gave to US Vogue magazine, in which she claimed Brand was never comfortable with her being his equal.

The couple split 14 months after they got married in India in 2010. They have had zero contact since.

"Let's just say I haven't heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me on December 31 2011," Perry told Vogue.

The 28-year-old claimed the stand-up, who is 10 years her senior, was "hysterical in some ways until he started making jokes about me" when he had no idea she was in the audience at one of his shows.

Perry said she invited Brand "time and time again" to join her on tour.

"He didn't like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour. So that was really hurtful, and it was very controlling, which was upsetting," she said.

Perry said Brand was a "very smart man" and that she was "in love with him" when they married.

She added: "I felt a lot of responsibility for it ending, but then I found out the real truth, which I can't necessarily disclose because I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day."

Since their divorce, Perry has had an on-off relationship with musician John Mayer, but she said it wasn't to get back at Brand.

"No, not at all. No, I was madly in love with him. I still am madly in love with him. All I can say about that relationship is that he's got a beautiful mind. Beautiful mind, tortured soul," she added.

"I do have to figure out why I am attracted to these broken birds."US shock jock Howard Stern recently asked Brand: "What do you make of your ex-wife dating John Mayer? Doesn't she know he's a worse womaniser than you?"

Brand joked back: "Worse or better – depending on how you view it," to which Stern replied: "He's a better womaniser, then?"

"Hold on, I resent that!" countered Brand, adding: "I'm world class."
