RTE rivals join forces for relay challenge

THEY might be up against each other for TV's top job -- but Kathryn Thomas and Grainne Seoige are set to join forces for a different challenge.

Operation Transformation presenter Kathryn (32) and new Crimecall host Grainne (38) will put their on-screen rivalry aside next month to enter an Ironman challenge, the Herald can reveal.

Both RTE stars are being tipped to land the role as presenter of the station's new talent show The Voice, but say that won't get in the way of their training.

Kathryn explained how she and Grainne have teamed up with Siobhan Byrne of Body Byrne for the event -- and will be going head to head with Ray D'Arcy, his partner Jenny Kelly and crooner Brian Kennedy.

"I went in to Today FM this week to talk to Ray about it and I didn't even realise we were up against each other -- it was only when I went in to the studio," she explained. "Myself and Grainne are on the same team which is great so I'm busy training for that. It's going okay."

A source has revealed that Kathryn is the likeliest candidate to co-present The Voice, given that Grainne has already been given five RTE shows to work on.

"The Voice is the biggest show on the autumn schedule, the presenting role is the gig everyone wants but Kathryn is the one whose name was been mooted for it this week."

Both women have been taking part in gruelling workouts in a bid to reach their peak physical condition for the September 4 event, held in aid of Irish heart charity Croi.

Taking place in Galway, the Ironman 70.3 relay challenge consists of a 1.9km swim, followed by a 90km cycle ride and a 21.1km run.
