PIPPA Middleton was among tens of thousands of tennis fans who descended on Wimbledon for the first day of the Championships yesterday.

Kate Middleton's sister joined brother James in the royal box as they watched reigning Roger Federer sweep to victory against Victor Hanescu.

Also invited to the royal box were Prince and Princess Michael of Kent; former US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice; Federer's parents Robbie and Lynette; racing driver Jackie Stewart; actress Felicity Kendal; athlete Denise Lewis and defending doubles champion Jonny Marray.

Away from the royal box, Co Down golfer Rory McIlroy watched girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki at her day one appearance. Earlier, thousands of fans queued to try to see Andy Murray at the start of his Wimbledon campaign.
