Our festive family trip eased anguish of losing my mother

Xpose presenter Lisa Cannon has opened up for the first time about the heartbreak she felt this Christmas following the death of her mother.

The glamorous TV3 star explained how the festive season was difficult for her because it brings back the memories of her mother's death in 2008.

Lisa's mother, Laura, was a teacher at St John of God Secondary School, in Artane, and she passed away at Blackrock Clinic after a long illness.

The entertainment reporter said she and her dad Michael went away for the holidays this year to keep their mind off the huge loss they felt at the huge absence.

Speaking to the Herald, Lisa revealed how they enjoyed a family trip to London and stayed at the exclusive Claridge's hotel in Mayfair.

"I went with my dad and my grandmother, which was fabulous," she said.

Magical

"It was a lot tougher for us this year because the reality hit home, but I'm really glad we got away, that was the most important thing.

"Having my grandmother there, who's my mum's mum, was really special. It was kind of magical as it was snowing," she added.

"We got a horse-drawn carriage all around London on Christmas morning and we had chocolates and marshmallows."

But the TV3 showbiz reporter didn't completely leave her work behind as her grandmother turned out to be a skilled undercover journalist, when she met the mother of James Bond actress Rosamund Pike.

According to Lisa: "I did a bit of celeb spotting while I was there. Rosamund Pike's grandmother, who's 91, and my grandmother, who's nearly 97, bonded over hot port in front of the fire.

"Next thing Rosamund turned to me and I said to her, 'I interviewed you a few weeks ago' and she said, 'I remember you'.

"We spent Christmas Eve with her and we swapped emails, so we might catch up again," she added.

Lisa, who is an only child, went on to explain how she and her father are now closer than ever.

She surprised her father with a trip to New York as a Christmas present and the pair are planning to take the trip together.

Opportunity

And Lisa plans to take the opportunity to interview Martin Scorsese while she's there.

Lisa was speaking yesterday at the launch of this year's Kellogg's Special K two-week Kick-Start plan.
