Miriam and Karen lead the way by rocking the recession-chic look

IT LOOKS like Ireland’s TV stars are choosing to scale back on unnecessary expense by rocking "recession chic".

Style queens Miriam O’Callaghan and Karen Koster are leading the way in budget chic by recycling outfits we’ve already seen them in.

While they are some of the biggest names in the industry to dress, with impressive wardrobe allowances for their respective shows, they are both proving that a good look never goes out of style.

Miriam, who proudly speaks of how she recycles items from her wardrobe, was showing off the same red winter coat that caught our attention last year earlier this week.

Her long red jacket from Dunnes Stores promptly sold out after she wore it on Primetime last December after the State broadcaster was inundated with requests from fashionistas about where to get their hands on one.

As part of a special two-page spread in Wednesday’s Herald – where she divulged everything from pay cuts, her children, to losing her sister – she showed off the cosy coat.

And the downto- earth broadcaster revealed that she even talked the retailer down €10 when she purchased it last year, from €60 down to €50.

The Savida military coat sent fashionistas throughout the country rushing to their local store to pick up their own after she wore it last December covering the flooding crisis in Galway.

While she is labelled one of the most fashion forward women in Ireland, she has no qualms about recycling clothes and said she finds it strange when people notice she wears the same item more than once.

Serious

“Somebody actually wrote in to me last week after that interview with Brian Lenihan, it's so funny, saying ‘I liked the interview but you wore that dress the week before'. I'm going, ‘what, are these people who never recycled their clothes?'“she laughs.

“I'm known for dressing in High Street clothes. It's no big deal. I do not buy designer clothes. There aren't that many women who have survived in the media. I survived. I think Prime Time is me in a way. Ultimately, I'm quite a serious person.”

Meanwhile, Karen Koster might have scored a massive coup for Xpose in the fashion stakes, by being exclusively dressed by Karen Millen, but she still doesn’t retire a look in real life. The down-to-earth showbiz reporter knows a good thing when she sees it, and is happy to rock the same winning look twice. Her Grecian style, floor length white gown set temperatures rising in May at the TVNow Awards - and she put a brand new twist on the dress at Keith Duffy’s Irish Autism Action ball at the weekend, where she was MC’ing.

While she opted for a ‘curly do’ at the awards ceremony, she loosened up her locks with a straighter look at the ball.
