RTE is to honour the spectacular career of national institution Micheal O Muircheartaigh this evening in a Late Late tribute show.
The show will acknowledge the 80-year-old's enormous contribution to Irish sport and will feature a host of familiar faces.
The Kerry man announced yesterday that this Sunday's All Ireland football final would be his last.
He said: "I decided maybe the time to go is when you're still enjoying it.
"I've been at it a long time, it's been most enjoyable and a privilege to be in that position.
"It was an honour for me to be at the source of this wonderful entertainment, to be part of a continuous and successful venture."
Micheal is expected to continue radio work with RTE on an occasional basis, and he will be in the commentary box for the international rules series with Australia next month.
Ireland's politicians and sports personalities have already paid tribute to the legendary journalist.
President Mary McAleese said he was "absolutely beloved in all of the 32 counties" and that he "brought pride to people's hearts".
