Katherine and Gethin split as work gets in way

Work commitments drove opera star Katherine Jenkins and her TV presenter beau apart, friends have claimed.

High profile singer Jenkins revealed she and her TV presenter fiance Gethin Jones had ended their relationship.

The Welsh singer, who began dating the former Blue Peter host in late 2007, said they were both "beyond broken-hearted".

Jenkins and Jones announced the news by each posting statements on Twitter.

Mezzo-soprano Jenkins (31) from Neath, South Wales, wrote: "Sorry for being quiet of late, it's just that I have some very sad news.

"Geth and I have decided to go our separate ways. We are both beyond broken-hearted. All your hugs and support will be much appreciated."

Cardiff-born Jones (33) echoed his former fiancee's words in a post to his followers on the social networking site. He said: "I'm deeply sad to tell you that Kath and I have ended our relationship as a couple. We are both heartbroken."

The pair announced their engagement in February and were expected to wed in 2012.

Earlier this year, Jones had said becoming a husband was "probably going to be the best job I ever have and one I'll want to do the best I can at".

SAD

He added: "Family for me is about staying together and hopefully I'll be the best husband possible."

Friends said work had driven them apart. One revealed: "Katherine is very much in demand and goes around the world. Gethin isn't quite as high-profile and they started to drift apart. They were talking before Christmas and Katherine suggested they split. She said it couldn't go on. They were living separate lives, so they decided to call it a day. I'm sure there's no one else involved. It's so sad -- they looked amazing together."

Gethin wasn't at the family home in Cardiff yesterday but his dad, retired headmaster Goronwy (63) said: "They were a lovely couple -- everyone thought so. Katherine has been very kind to us."

Katherine's mum Susan (62) said from her home in Neath: "It is very sad for both of them." The singer, who is worth £30m, starts a UK tour next week.

They are the latest couple to confirm they've split via Twitter. Cheryl Cole, left, used the networking site to announce she'd dumped Ashley, and Ashton Kutcher tweeted about the end of his marriage to Demi Moore.
