Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are Hollywood's cutest couple -- or are they?

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are Hollywood's cutest couple -- or are they? Since their relationship started Bieber and Gomez have been hit by rumours that their relationship is a publicity stunt and accused of staging public displays of affection specifically for the paparazzi. The fact they share a talent agent has only increased speculation that they have been put together.

So is it all staged? Or is 17-year-old Canadian singer Justin really going out with 19-year-old Disney star Selena? They confirmed their relationship in March, yet photos of them looking awkward together have done nothing to dispel the rumours that they are more interested in promoting themselves, than they are in each other.

Again this week it was reported that they were on the verge of splitting, after Selena apparently charged Justin with being too "immature".

However, Justin and Selena are not alone in having their love scrutinised for signs that their relationship is more fake than fabulous.

Earlier this month Alex Reid and Chantelle Houghton declared their love on an early morning television interview. The pair, who hooked up in May -- four months after cage fighter Reid split from Katie Price -- insisted their relationship was not a "showmance" during a loved-up appearance on UTV's This Morning.

When TV host Eamonn Holmes questioned whether their relationship was the real thing, Reid (36) said: "Love has many degrees. This feels real. This feels relaxed."

While former Big Brother star Houghton (27) was equally enthusiastic about her new beau, and gushed: "I always call him the hurricane. When he walks in he lights up the room and makes everyone feel good about themselves and I haven't felt good about myself in a long time."

Justin and Selena are upcoming stars whose appeal only increases by them being together. It has been suggested that Reid and Houghton are on the cusp of career failure, and that being a couple will help keep them in the limelight a little bit longer.

Reality star Kim Kardashian and athlete Kris Humphries married in an elaborate ceremony in California last week -- thought to have cost them in the region of €12m. Fans of the reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians will know how eager Kim was to marry and have children. The middle sister of the three Kardashian girls, she had already seen sisters Khloe and Kourtney settle down.

She first spotted American basketball player Kris while at a New Jersey Nets game last October, and admitted on her sister's reality show, Kourtney and Khloe Take New York, that she was eager to get to know him better.

The couple first had dinner in Nobu restaurant in NYC last November -- and have now married following a whirlwind 10-month romance.

It's the kind of compelling storyline which makes Keeping Up with the Kardashians a massive hit with viewers and makes them so much money that TV host Jay Leno suggested they should run America, and earn the country some much-needed dosh.

It's easy to be cynical when it comes to celebrity couples. Nobody could believe it when Tom Cruise proposed to Katie Holmes two months after they began dating -- they married in an elaborate ceremony in Italy in 2006.

It wasn't just the age difference of 16 years, or Tom (49) broadcasting their fledgling relationship while bouncing maniacally up and down on a couch on Oprah. Or the fact that he had dumped his former wife, Nicole Kidman. It was the haste with which Tom proposed to a younger star, who by being by his side, makes him look younger and sexier.

But almost five years later, Tom and Katie are still together, and are hands-on parents to their young daughter Suri.

So will Cameron Diaz and Alex Rodriguez also have a similarly happy ending? For a while there Diaz (38) was known as one of those female celebs who is perpetually single.

Or, she was known as Justin Timberlake's second-best known ex, after Britney Spears. While American baseball star A-Rod (36) was best known as Madonna's ex. Now the pair have apparently set up house together, and Cameron is spending time with A-Rod's children. So why are there so few photos of A-lister Cameron with the man she has supposedly been dating on and off for the past two years?
