Jamie takes it to the Wire on boys' night out with TV star Idris

Rugby star Jamie Heaslip was back in the thick of things last night when he lined out to support the launch of Halo Reach for Xbox 360.

The Irish backrow player has been noticeably absent from the social scene in recent months after using his summer break to travel across the States.

But he was determined it would be a boys' only night out as he joined forces with The Wire's Idris Elba, RTE's Baz Ashmawy and 98fm's Steven Cooper to take on a series of challengers at an invitation- only event at the Odeon club on Harcourt Street.

And while the sportsman's fellow Elite Squad members made the most of the festivities, partying into the early hours, Jamie explained how it would be an early night for him as he was sticking strictly to soft drinks, given that the rugby season is now back in full swing.

Jamie (26) is believed to be back with his long-term girlfriend of over three years, Tara McComiskey after a brief split earlier this year, but was maintaining a dignified silence about his romance. The couple went their separate ways last March but first set tongues wagging that they had rekindled their love in May when Tara accompanied Jamie to RTE studios, where he appeared on the Late Late Show.

The hunky Leinster man was shedding no light on the matter last night however, declining to comment on his relationship status.

"I'm here because I love the game, nothing else," he told the Diary. "I'm a big fan of gaming and I think it's a great way to relax off the pitch.

"It's also a relatively healthy way to unwind.

"When I was first approached about taking part I asked who the mystery person involved was and when I heard it was Idris I was immediately sold. I'm a big fan of The Wire so it was a great honour to get to meet the main man and have a laugh with him all evening.

"I came straight from training. Today's actually a day off for us but I'll go in for a brief workout. We're back to full-time training now after the summer, which I spent most of in Miami, Las Vegas and London for a while."

Meanwhile, star guest at last night's event Idris Elba, better known to many as Stringer Bell in HBO's The Wire, made the most of his visit to the Emerald Isle, decamping to Grafton Street hotspot Lillie's Bordello alongside his entourage to continue the celebrations after the Odeon bash.

The British star has been staying at the Merrion Hotel during his visit and was due to jet back to the UK this afternoon.

He has promised to return to Dublin in the near future however, in order to debut his skills on the decks as a DJ.
