George beefs up to join celebrity Everest journey

Former Fair City hunk George McMahon is piling on the muscle ahead of leading a celebrity charity trek to Mount Everest base camp.

The popular actor is one of six well-known names to sign up for the challenge in October.

The group, which also includes current Carraigstown resident Jenny Kavanagh, RTE presenter Rob Ross, BBC Dancing On Ice star Donal McIntyre, artist Philip Gray and 98FM's Teena Gates, have been training since January.

A source revealed: "They're hoping to raise more than €50,000 for the HOPE Foundation to build a new girl's home for street children in Calcutta.

"They've all been training really hard but were shocked when they finally got the itinerary this week."

The full group will train together for the first time this weekend when they climb Ireland's highest peak, Carrauntoohil.

The attempt means there are now two Irish celebrity climbs this year. Pint-sized TV3 star Sinead Desmond is in the midst of intensive training in her bid to climb to the base camp in November.
