Garda fitted the bill for Love/Hate cameo role

THEY admitted to hiring real life criminals as extras and now it has emerged that the Love/Hate creators also recruited a top cop.

John Quinn may have seemed like a typical country garda when he appeared in Sunday's episode -- and that's because he is.

But Detective Garda Quinn was too busy to even watch his cameo on the show as he was playing the dame in Rapunzel at the Mullingar Art Centre.

With nearly 15 years as a detective under his belt and 28 years in the force, he knows all there is to know about the violent life of gangsters, including the use of firearms.

The detective, who based in Athlone Garda Station, fitted right into the role when he was shaking down IRA man Paddy, the righthand man of tough nut Dano, played by Jason Barry.

He said: "It is nice to be associated with such a good show. It is well-researched, very professional and a very pleasurable experience."

The 49-year-old began acting back in 2003 with a part in Jesus Christ Superstar with the Mullingar Variety Group. Now he is thinking of furthering his acting career if he retires in 2015, when he will be 30 years in the force.

That career included being at Abbeylara, Co Longford on April 20, 2000, when the Emergency Response Unit shot John Carthy dead. He was at the scene from start to finish and was armed.
