Facebook gang ransacked our house while we were on holiday - TV star Alan

TV star Alan Hughes believes his home was ransacked and burgled by thieves who learned via Facebook that he was on a Spanish holiday.

The TV3 star spoke to the Herald of his shock after he returned home to find his home trashed.

His Lexus car, TVs, laptops, cash, electrical goods and jewellery were stolen during the raid on the property he shares with husband Karl Broderick (41) near Malahide, in Dublin.

Ireland's best known gay couple had been holidaying outside Barcelona before they flew home yesterday.

The couple may not recoup their loss, as Karl confirmed that their house insurance has lapsed because Alan forgot to renew the policy.

"We walked into a scene of total destruction with our home torn apart," Alan revealed.

"There are the possessions we know are gone straight away but in weeks to come we will be opening drawers and find even more personal stuff taken."

The burglars gained entry by throwing a rock through the back window of the home.

Mr Hughes posted a picture of the rock and damage last night on Facebook.

The criminals also cut alarm wires outside the house so no one would be alerted.

It was only after walking into the home that Alan realised his silver Lexus car was taken from the driveway.

"That was the most horrible part. I'm so often on the road, the boot was full of my stuff," he said.

However, stealing the 2010 car could be the biggest mistake made by the bungling thieves as they filled it with petrol at a nearby service station.

"They got the guys on CCTV in the garage, so it could help us identify them," Alan said.

He admitted they feared their home could have been targeted by thieves as a result of posts put on Facebook during their trip.

"This has made me think twice about using Facebook. You really don't know who is reading your posts.

"But Karl thinks the opposite and believes you can't live your life in secrecy over something like this happening."

Songwriter Karl was horrified that one of the stolen laptops contained music and backing tracks he had been working on.

Together for 20 years, the couple, who married two years ago, have been inundated with offers of support from friends.

The pair had their fair share of heartbreak in the period following their nuptials, too, as they suffered the loss of Alan's sister Doreen and Karl's mother, both to cancer in a short space of time.

It emerged earlier this week that the home of ex-Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan (22) was burgled hours after she tweeted her boyfriend was away.

Flanagan, who played Rosie Webster in the soap until 2012, was shaken by the incident at the Cheshire home she shares with footballer Scott Sinclair.

Three raiders broke into her home and confronted her on Monday just before midnight.
