Eddie Murphy crowned Comic Icon

Eddie Murphy is to receive the top gong at the Comedy Icon Awards in the US.

The Oscar-nominated star of Dreamgirls, Coming To America and The Nutty Professor is the first recipient of the inaugural award, which recognises his "immeasurable" contribution to the industry.

Eddie, who started performing and writing his own routines at the age of 15, will receive his gong at a star-studded ceremony, taking place at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom on March 26.

Tina Fey, Jon Stewart, Jimmy Fallon, Tracy Morgan, South Park's Matt Stone and Trey Parker, Rob Corddry, Bill Hader and Chloe Moretz are among the presenters and attendees, while The Roots are the house band on the night.

"Eddie Murphy's impact in the world of comedy is immeasurable. From the characters he created on SNL, to his groundbreaking stand-up performances and unforgettable film roles, Murphy changed the game forever and we're honoured that he will be joining us for the first-ever Comedy Awards," said MTV Networks Entertainment Group's Casey Patterson.
