Cruise sues for $50m over 'vicious' Suri lie

TOM Cruise has launched a sensational $50m lawsuit over claims he abandoned six-year-old daughter Suri.

The actor is taking on what his legal team have described as the "sleaze peddlers".

Papers filed in a Los Angeles Federal Court say the publishers of sister magazines Life&Style and In Touch have seriously damaged his reputation as a father.

The lawsuit refers to two cover stories published by the magazines in July and September with the headlines "Abandoned by daddy" and "Abandoned by her dad".

Lawyer Bert Fields said the magazine's recent reports that the star had practically deserted his daughter Suri with ex-wife Katie Holmes was a "vicious lie".

"Tom is a caring father who dearly loves Suri. She's a vital part of his life and always will be. To say he has 'abandoned' her is a vicious lie. To say it in lurid headlines with a tearful picture of Suri is reprehensible," the lawyer said.

Fields said Cruise did not want to file the lawsuit but felt he needed to get back at "sleaze peddlers" who are trying to make money with "disgusting lies".

Cruise's lawyer also said that any money that the actor receives from the magazine will be donated to charity.

Cruise and Suri's mother, actress Katie Holmes, divorced earlier this year after six years of marriage. Despite the break-up being laid bare in public, former Dawsons Creek actress Holmes was clearly putting on a brave face for daughter Suri after it emerged that she taped her guest appearance on Project Runway only four days after announcing her split from then husband Cruise.

The 33-year-old was ever the professional, according to the trailers of the 12th season of the programme, set to be aired in the US, and showed no sign of personal troubles.
