WAYNE and Coleen Rooney have issued a joint statement telling of their "extremely painful" week. They have appealed to be left alone to deal with the allegations of the footballer's alleged cheating with a prostitute.
They have appealed to be left alone to deal with the allegations of the footballer's alleged cheating with a prostitute.
The statement was sparked by claims that Rooney (24) slept with €1,400 call girl Jennifer Thompson while his wife was pregnant with their first child.
It said: "The last six days have been extremely painful for us and for our families.
"It is impossible for us, as it would be for any family, to attempt to resolve any issues in the current media glare and against the backdrop of so many inaccurate and intrusive stories.
We would therefore ask that the media now respects our privacy and the right of our family to discuss these matters in private."
Speculation is rife that the high profile pair, who have been together since their teens, are on the road to reconciliation.
Although Coleen (24) has left the couple's plush home along with their 10-month-old son Kai and is holed up in her parents' home, she has been conspicuously wearing her wedding ring.
The pair yesterday spoke on the phone before the footballer went to stay the night at a team hotel to prepare for Manchester United's Premier League clash at his old team Everton today.
Rooney is alleged to have spent several nights at the five-star Lowry Hotel with Jennifer Thompson and another prostitute Helen Wood (23) while his wife was pregnant with their son last year. But it is believed that Coleen only learned of the affair when her husband sent her a text message from the England training camp warning her the news was about to break in a Sunday newspaper.
Meanwhile, his long-suffering wife has received messages of support from former WAG Cheryl Cole, whose husband Ashley cheated on her with various different women for the majority of their four year marriage.
And the X Factor judge's kind words have helped Coleen throughout the drama.
"Cheryl's latest text was very short but she made it clear she was thinking of Coleen and understood what she was going through," a source said.
"Coleen was really pleased and showed it to a few friends. No one understands better than Cheryl what it's like to be in that situation."
It is understood the text gave her no advice on what to do, it simply offered her support.
Coleen reportedly responded with just a string of kisses.
And as the England star prepares to touch down on his former home turf Everton this afternoon, fans are reportedly preparing to hurl a number of brand new insults and jibes due to his off pitch antics.
His manager refused to discuss the sex scandal.
Alex Ferguson said yesterday: "Let's put it to bed straight away. I am not discussing any of my players' personal lives."
