Cheryl tops Melanie in battle for book sales

Singer Cheryl Cole has stopped Melanie Verwoerd's autobiography from reaching the top spot in the Irish bestseller lists.

In Cheryl, the star recounts her failed marriage to Ashley Cole, her sacking from the US X Factor and her time with Girls Aloud. However, Melanie's book When We Dance has become an overnight bestseller.

The memoir of Gerry Ryan's former partner is No 2 in the top ten paperback non-fiction sales charts -- despite only being on sale for two days.

"I am delighted that the men and women of Ireland are now reading the book of my life for themselves," said Ms Verwoerd.

When We Dance sold 949 copies compared to the 969 copies of Cheryl, according to Nielsen Bookscan.
