Chefs serve up a feast of top-notch hiking for RTE

CELEBRITY chefs Derry Clarke and Kevin Thornton will be swapping their aprons for walking boots this month as they join forces for a new RTE programme about walking in Ireland.

Entitled Tracks And Trails, the RTE One show will be fronted by a different personality each week with the inaugural programme being kicked off by Derry and Kevin.

A source revealed how despite working in the same industry, the pair "didn't really know each other properly" before filming the challenging programme together.

The first series sees them hitting the Beara Peninsula in south west Cork and venturing out from Allihies, taking in the Garnish Pier and down to Dursey Sound where they take a cable car across to the island.

The second stage sees them going down the ruins of the Coppermines where they get an insight into some of the appalling conditions that workers needed to endure in order to mine the copper ore.

"They met a local man who guided them down into the mine itself and they were very fortunate to be given the opportunity to see these caves and mines because they are no longer available for public view," the source added.

"They were hugely impressed with their visit to the Beara peninsula with Derry saying how not only was it magnificent to see and great to do it but it is Irish and it's free."

Best known for owning celebrity haunt L'Ecrivain, Derry is no stranger to reality TV and has previously appeared in programmes including a stint as a mentor on Failte Towers.

A Michelin-starred chef, he's also a regular guest on shows including The Restaurant and The Panel and is a firm fixture on the social scene along with wife Sallyanne.

Fellow restaurateur Kevin Thornton is also a small-screen regular, having filmed series including Guerilla Gourmet, while he too owns his own eaterie on St Stephen's Green.
