A WHITE table cloth and some first edition books by WB Yeats were presented by former Taoiseach Brian Cowen to US President Barack Obama.

US authorities have published a detailed list of gifts to the president from world leaders and their spouses.

While some visitors to the White House chose to splash the cash, the former Fianna Fail leader went down the more sentimental route.

Clearly hoping Mr Obama would dip into his Irish heritage, Mr Cowen gave a pair of first edition Yeats books, costing a modest €276.

First Lady Michelle was presented with a €395 white linen table cloth by designer Thomas Ferguson.

The gifts from the Cowens were delivered in 2010, the year the banks collapsed and Fianna Fail imploded.

That might explain why the Irish visitors spent considerably less than our neighbours.

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy and wife Carla handed over a luxurious ultraviolet vase, coupled with a crystal brooch.

TEQUILA

And unlike the Cowens, the Sarkozys came bearing gifts for the Obama girls, who were treated to a selection of DVDs, books and CDs which cost the French government almost €1,100.

Stuffed animals, porcelain vases and bottles of tequila were among the gifts presented to the Obamas in 2010.
