The actress Billie Piper has expressed fears that her son will be ‘teased and tormented’ because she has become the 'face of prostitution' from her role in The Secret Diary of a Call Girl.
Piper who plays Belle in the successful ITV drama about a high class London call girl, said that she was heavily criticised for her decision to take the role.
“All of a sudden, I am the face of prostitution,” she said “Suddenly it’s my entire fault and it’s massively irresponsible and I’m responsible for glamorising prostitution and making it OK. Big, scary, opinionated people suddenly had things to say about me. I was quite surprised, and quite frightened, to be honest,” she told Radio Times.
With a third series about to air, the 27 year old said her own life had changed since she began filming the first series in 2007 - she is married to the actor Laurence Fox and she has a 15-month-old son called Winston.
She said she was concerned that he would be “tormented” for her decision to play Belle.
“I feel like there were the carefree, reckless years when all I had was a boyfriend and I wasn’t the face of a family. Now I’m a mum, and this time round there were definitely more moments when I questioned what I was doing…I had to go home and feed my son, and it’s a radical shift in your brain from being this provocative, man-eating person by day to this new mum at night.
"I’m all too aware that, one day, he’s probably going to be teased about it, tormented even. So there were these moments of, ‘Oh my God, what am I doing?’", she said.
The former singer has met with Dr Brooke Magnanti, whose 'Belle de Jour: Diary of a London Call Girl' blog inspired the show, in a forthcoming programme entitled 'Billie and the Call Girl Bare All'.
The show follows Dr Magnanti's decision to reveal her identity in Novemeber.
The 34-year-old worked as a €342-an-hour prostitute to fund her PhD studies, turning her experiences into an anonymous blog which attracted millions of readers before it was turned into a best-selling book.
Billie and the Call Girl Bare All will be shown next Monday 25 January 10pm on ITV2
