Upstaging model-turned-actor Jamie Dornan and his chiselled cheekbones is no mean feat.

But Belfast born actor Ben Peel (29) has done just that – and sent his female audience swooning in the process.

Peel stars alongside Dornan (31) in dark and moody BBC crime drama The Fall.

The young actor set pulses racing on Sunday night when he got down and dirty with co-star Gillian Anderson in the opening few scenes.

Peel plays the part of hunky cop on the block James Olson in the new drama. And his steamy sex scene certainly made an impression with female viewers.

Twitter was awash with comments as female audiences exchanged comments on the latest hunk to grace our TV screens.

"Oh. My. This is the stuff dreams are made of," one Tweeter commented. "Minus all the murder."

"Look at his body! Look at his body!" another added excitedly. "It's incredible."

With his washboard abs and toned arms it looks like Peel spends considerably more time lifting weights than patrolling his beat.

The Fall has viewers hooked with the opening episode pulling in more than 400,000 viewers. The second episode also received strong ratings of 360,000.

"It has received a good reaction so far and we see it as a great and positive start to the series," a spokesperson for RTE told the Herald. "It's been popular with male and female viewers. It's a very slick and polished drama."

Peel has previously starred in UK TV series Doctors, Spooks and Inspector Lewis. He also acted opposite Michael Fassbender in Steve McQueen's multi-award winning feature film Hunger.

The toned star trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama and has been in demand since graduating and has signed with Lisa Richards Agency.

Peel joins a stellar Irish cast, including actor Nick Lee, Emmet Scanlon and Simon Delaney.
