3 for the weekend

Pezat bordeaux rouge 2005, €19.99, Cellars, Higgins in Clonskeagh. Jonathan Maltus makes stunning Bordeaux wines such as Le Dôme and Les Astéries in tiny quantities, but at three-figure prices. Fortunately he uses his skills and vines to make this more affordable beauty.

  • penfolds rwt barossa shiraz 2004, €80, Londis in Malahide, Jus De Vine, Redmonds.

Penfolds Grange is Australia's most iconic red and known for its robust style and American oak use. Penfolds created this sibling as a counterpoint in a more elegant style using French oak, and for me it outshines its more expensive rival.

  • craggy range te muna pinot noir 2006, €39.50, Redmonds, McCabes, Egan's in Portlaoise, Bin No. 9. Craggy Range has invested about €50 million in various wineries and vineyards so don't expect a €9.99 special soon. Do revel in the fact that this is cutting-edge wine from New Zealand's finest and you won't find red Burgundy at this price to touch it.
