Eircom - clarification

A court report published in the Herald on Wednesday, October 29 stated that Luke Nestor of Castleross View, Baldoyle, Co Dublin was an Eircom support technician.

We have been asked to clarify that Mr Nestor works for a contract agency and is not an Eircom employee.

British soldiers 'binge drinking'

Urgent action is needed to tackle "hazardous" levels of alcohol consumption among British armed forces, MPs have warned.

The Commons Defence Committee said excessive drinking is the "norm" across all three services - leading to domestic abuse, violence and mental health issues.

It called on the Ministry of Defence to develop a "comprehensive strategy" to reduce misuse and challenge the prevalent binge drinking culture - including a review of alcohol pricing and availability on military bases.

600 prisoners lined up, shot

Militants from the Islamic State carried out a mass killing of hundreds of Iraqi prison inmates when they seized the country's second-largest city of Mosul in June, an international rights group has said.

Some 600 male Shiite inmates from Badoosh prison outside Mosul were forced to kneel along the edge of a nearby ravine and were shot with automatic weapons, Human Rights Watch said in a statement based on interviews with 15 Shiite prisoners who survived the massacre.

Between 30 to 40 prisoners survived, most by rolling into the valley and pretending to be dead, despite the gunmen setting fire to the ravine in which the bodies fell.

UKIP to win in TV spoof

Channel 4 is to screen a spoof documentary imagining if UKIP won next year's British general election.

It will feature actors and archive footage to examine the first 100 days of power if the party took power at the election next May. The channel has previously broadcast similar "what if" programmes in which Gary Glitter is hanged for sex offences and former Prime Minister Tony Blair is tried for war crimes.
