Editorial: Brian Cowen's day at Banking Inquiry

Former Taoiseach Brian Cowen's first appearance provided us with an early apology and an admission he made mistakes during his tenure.

The former Fianna Fail finance minister was in robust form throughout - combative, authoritative and well versed on affairs of the day. But question still remain.

His declaration that the then government only had "one shot" to get it right on the night of the bank guarantee or the country would be set back 25 years still holds little water for those who are paying debts and left in negative equity following the economic collapse.

The jury remains out.

Quadruple happiness

You've heard of double trouble - but the four four-month-old Kelly boys could be even more than that.

Quadruplets Tom, James, Charlie and Luke Kelly might well prove a handful, but they are the apples of their parents' eyes.

Anita and David from Offaly were understandably shocked to learn their family would grow by four babies overnight, but have taken it all in their stride.

Hats off to the staff at the Rotunda for helping out when the Kellys needed them most.

Mum-of-five Anita has every intention of returning to work as a full-time nurse and we wish her all the best in fulfilling her career dreams now that she has her dream family.
