Eco-park to secure city water
FAST-track planning approval is being sought for a €540m eco-park, which holds the key to Dublin's future water supply.
Dublin City Council has initiated a process where it hopes to have the project listed as a strategic infrastructure development (SID).
The local authority will hold consultations with An Bord Pleanala over the coming weeks.
The eco-park proposed at Bord na Mona's Garryhinch Bog in the Midlands would have facilities for fishing, boating, cycling, water and leisure sports on 500 acres.
But its main function would be as a water reservoir to supply Dublin and surrounding counties into the future.
With a SID designation, the council could apply directly to An Bord Pleanala for approval, bypassing the more time consuming route of seeking permission from the relevant local authority.
It is understood the application by the council is at a very early stage.
