Aoibhinn McGinnity is excited about her role as Jovie in Elf The Musical, but she's not sure yet if her Love/Hate cast members will be in the audience on the opening night.

The musical is due to open at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre next Tuesday.

"I never like knowing when family or friends are in the audience until afterwards. I like the blackout - just being able to see the shapes of heads," Aoibhinn said.

The Monaghan native is expecting a large turnout of supporters and loved ones at the show during its month-long run.

"The day we announced the show, I got loads of texts from many of the adults I know who told me they'll be coming - and they didn't even use their kids as an excuse. That's a brilliant sign," she said.

The 28-year-old is delighted at the timing of her new role as well.

"I want to do as many different parts as I can but I'm not a huge planner," she said.

"I don't think you can plan, but it dawned on me that I really missed musical theatre and I was trying to figure out how to get back to it, because Ireland doesn't have a whole pile of musical theatre.

"Then Elf came along and here I am getting my voice in tune looking forward to singing and dancing like I did at college. I feel very lucky."

While it's a four-week-run, Aoibhinn will still get to head home for a few days at Christmas.

"We have Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and St Stephen's Day so I'll go up home to chill and just eat," she said.

"My mum cooks a big dinner and my auntie will probably be there. My brother might be home from Australia too, so it'll be nice."
