Donald clinches money-list title

GOLF: Luke Donald revelled in one of the best wins of his career yesterday, after mounting a final-day surge to clinch the PGA Tour money-list title by a whisker.

Donald overhauled a five-stoke deficit to claim victory at the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic in Florida.

Starting the day in joint 14th but knowing a win would likely see him overhaul American Webb Simpson on the money list, England's world number one shot a 10-birdie 64 to emerge with an unlikely triumph.

Playing partner Simpson finished the tournament four shots behind the Englishman. It was Donald's first stroke play victory on United States soil in over five years and it gives him a great chance to become the first player to top the money lists on both sides of the Atlantic in the same season.

In Europe he leads by over £1million, but there are eight events left.

Garcia ends barren run

GOLF: Sergio Garcia is finally back as a winner in golf -- but he needs to do it again if he is to play in next week's world championship in China.

An incredible 11-stroke, 27 under-par victory in his home Castello Masters yesterday ended nearly three barren years for the 31-year-old Spaniard. Despite his climb back into the world's top 35, Garcia became only ninth reserve for the WGC-HSBC Champions starting on Thursday week.

Britton good for Euros

ATHLETICS: Fionnuala Britton looks good to improve on last year's fourth place in December's European Cross-Country Championships in Slovenia, after her impressive repeat win in yesterday's Gerry Farnan Memorial three-mile cross-country event in the Phoenix Park.

The 27-year-old won in 15:41, 70 seconds ahead of Dundrum runner Aoife Byrne, with Leevale's Lizzy Lee back in third. Joe Sweeney, of Dundrum, won the men's five-mile event by 36 seconds from Michael Mulhare of Laoise AC and Leevale's Mark Hanrahan.

Killester still unbeaten

Basketball: Killester showed their mettle in Cork as they stunned Neptune, winning 68-64 to extend their unbeaten start to the season.

UCC Demons got back on track with a 72-58 win over UL Eagles in Limerick, while UCD kept Moycullen winless with a 67-65 victory in Galway. DCU Saints continued their strong start with an 84-61 win over Belfast Star.

In the Women's Superleague, UL beat both Killester and Brunell, while Glanmire, Waterford Wildcats and the Ulster Rockets made it a miserable weekend for Dublin clubs with wins over DCU Mercy, Liffey Celtics and Killester respectively.
