Dempsey takes over Moorefield
LUKE DEMPSEY has returned to his playing roots by taking up a high-profile club management role in Kildare.
The former Westmeath, Longford and Carlow manager was last night ratified as the new manager of Moorefield, succeeding former Dublin star Jack Sheedy who stepped down after the Newbridge outfit lost to Athy in this season's Kildare SFC.
Dempsey was born in Kildare, moved to Carlow when he was ten but played football through the '80s in his native county, having gone to college in Maynooth. He lined out for Johnstownbridge and also played senior with Kildare for several years.
The opportunity to return to "such familiar territory" appealed to the Westmeath-based teacher, who has yet to finalise his selectors.
"I was attracted to go back to the club scene in Kildare, and I would look on Moorefield as good title contenders. It's a challenge, and one I look on as a great challenge," he told the Evening Herald.
