Company chief arrested for abusing garda at festive bash

Stephen Tyrell's aggressive behaviour continued after he was brought to a city garda station. He avoided public order convictions after making a €500 donation to charity at Dublin District Court.

Tyrell (39), with an address at The Green, Johnstown Manor, Naas, pleaded guilty to causing a breach of the peace and violent behaviour in a garda station.

Dublin District Court heard the accused was removed from a pub on Dawson Street at 7pm on December 10 and was being restrained by doorstaff when Garda Miriam O'Donovan arrived.

He was extremely abusive to her and continued to shout after being told to refrain. A large crowd had gathered and the defendant was arrested and taken to Harcourt Terrace Garda Station, where he was very aggressive.

He eventually settled down and two days later he returned to the station and apologised.

The court heard the defendant had no previous convictions.

The defendant employed eight people, they were out for their Christmas party, he had "a few too many" and his behaviour was "totally out of character", his lawyer said.

"It is very embarrassing for him, being the boss and the director of the company."

He had €500 in court to offer to a charity.

Judge Cormac Dunne struck out the charges because of the defendant's "very generous contribution" and the fact that he had sought out the gardai to apologise to them.
