Chemical leak puts eight in hospital

By Robin Schiller

EIGHT people were taken to hospital after a chemical leak at a Dublin pharmaceutical plant.

The incident at the Swords Laboratories site happened at around 4am yesterday.

A small localised leak from a manufacturing vessel caused the emergency, and eight people were taken to Beaumont Hospital.

They presented reactionary symptoms and were kept at the hospital for observation in what is being described by the plant's solicitors as a "precautionary safeguard".

They have since been discharged.

In a statement, solicitors for Bristol-Myers Squib, which owns and operates the Swords plant, said an investigation was under way into the cause of the leak.

They also said the employees affected had been taken care of and no other staff are at risk as a result of the leak.

"The incident was immediately dealt with by the on-site emergency response team and the relevant authorities have been notified in line with normal procedure," the firm added.

The production area of the plant remained closed-off for the rest of the day.
