Beaufort blast past Íosagáin

basketball: round-up

Loreto Beaufort recorded an impressive 51-31 win over Coláiste Íosagáin in round two of the 19A Girls Cup in Stillorgan last Wednesday week.

Íosagáin were quick out of the blocks with point gaurd Tara Ni Shuilleabhain twice making baskets to hand her team a double-scores lead.

But with the influential Lauren Flynn making two lay-ups of her own, Beaufort were right back in contention by the end of the first quarter as they trailed by just the three points, 11-8.

And with Flynn and Sarah Staunton forming a good partnership, Beaufort continued to turn the screw with some good patient build-up from the visitors seeing Staunton land a basket from the edge of the key.

By now Beaufort's movement was causing Íosagáin a lot of problems and following a rebounded score from Aoife Hughes, Staunton then made a clever decoy run to allow Hughes to steal in behind the defence for a lay-up.

And one from the line by Hughes followed shortly by a well-placed basket from Flynn was to see Beaufort up by 21-13 at the break.

Íosagáin fortunes improved in the third quarter with Caoimhe Blennerhassett, Ní Shuilleabhain and Liadan Tobin Schnittger firing in three successive baskets.

But having increased their lead to 10 points at the end of the third, Beaufort assumed command once more. Flynn's quick passing allowed them to pull away with Hughes' purpose going forward seeing Loreto home comfortably in the end.

Elsewhere, Aisling McCann was the star for Muckross Park as they recorded as produced a terrfic second-half display to win 46-32 away to Coláiste Treasa, Kanturk in the 19C Girls Cup.
