Baraclough baffled by six-game ban for Quigley red card at Shels

SLIGO Rovers' manager Ian Baraclough says he's baffled by the six-game suspension handed down to striker Mark Quigley for a red card offence.

PFAI, the players' union, were informed over the weekend that a player had been handed a six-match suspension and it has since emerged that Quigley is the man in question.

He was shown a straight red card on his league debut for Sligo two weeks ago for a foul on Shelbourne's Pat Kavanagh, and now the FAI's disciplinary committee have decided to punish the Dubliner after seeing the referee's report.

"It is mystifying for me at the moment, Mark Quigley has got six games," said Baraclough.

"I'll have to look up the rules and regulations on that one, I think Eric Cantona got that for a kung-fu tackle."

Meanwhile, Baraclough, who experienced his first home league game in charge of Rovers on Saturday night against UCD, says a siege mentality has developed at the club.

For the second week in a row, defender Jason McGuinness scored an injury-time goal to help Sligo get a result.

On the opening day of the season, McGuinness scored a last-gasp equaliser to earn a draw away to Shelbourne and on Saturday he left it late to score and gift Sligo a 2-1 win over UCD.

"We have created a little bubble for ourselves because at the minute it looks like it is us against the world," said Baraclough.

"We have a small squad but they all want to work for each other. We want to try and turn negatives into positives and that is what the players have done.

"To a man they put in a monumental performance against UCD. They showed unbelievable character. They were disappointed to lose a goal, especially from a set piece, but to pick themselves up from that, drag themselves back up the pitch and create another chance was superb," added Baraclough as Rovers prepare for their next test, at home to Bohemians on Friday.
