Allen's super second

SHOWJUMPING: Bertram Allen took second place at the prestigious Longines World Cup Grand Prix in Zurich yesterday and gained enough points to qualify for the 2014/2015 World Cup Final in the USA in April.

As well as the valuable points gained in Switzerland, Allen was also rewarded with prize money of €37,000 euro for his runner-up place. Winner Sergio Alvarez Moya collected €90,000.

The 19-year-old Wexford rider was one of just seven to make the jump-off at the Swiss show from a strong international field of 40 combinations, his clear round on Ballywalter Farms's mare Molly Malone V a textbook display of horsemanship. In the jump-off Allen took the lead with four more riders left to jump, and only one - Spain's Alvarez Moya - managed to overtake the Irish teenager.

Corry shows his class in Mondello

MOTORSPORT: Belfast driver Will Corry led a northern clean sweep of the top three placings in TDC's Dave Griffin Memorial Multi Venue Autotest at Mondello Park, with his MG Midget a long way ahead of nearest challengers Robert Woodside's Mazda aand the Mini of James Wilson.

Corry was quickest on ten of the 20 tests and shared best times on six others. Darren Quille was best of the home drivers with his Colt just beating Eddie Peterson and Eamonn Byrne.

Brady on top in Texas shootout

HANDBALL: Paul Brady's winning streak continued on the US Handball Race4Eight tour when he defeated all-comes in Houston, Texas. Brady dismantled Californian Emmet Peixoto in the semi-final before outclassing Seattle's Seán Lenning 15-6, 15-6 in a one-sided final.
