200 lose jobs at Abbott

INTERNATIONAL medical devices company Abbott said it would offer "favourable" redundancy terms to 200 staff affected by job losses at its main Irish manufacturing plant.

Management at the Clonmel, Co Tipperary, plant informed staff yesterday that it was seeking voluntary redundancies. In a statement, the firm said the redundancies were necessary "to meet the evolving needs of the business".

A spokesperson for the firm said that the jobs were all based in manufacturing and manufacturing support.

She said the company would try to find redeployment opportunities for the staff in other areas and added that staff would be encouraged to apply for other jobs in the firm.
