Wanderers in superb form

Wexford wanderers XV travelled to Arklow on Sunday for the first competitive fixture of 2015.

The game provided Wanderers with the opportunity to kick off the year as they ended 2014 and to pile the pressure onto current league leaders Balbriggan who were on a rest weekend. The game at Ballymoyle Lane started with the home side attacking the Wexford boys in the early exchanges.

However, after weathering the storm of the opening period, Wanderers struck through captain Seán O Corcora who crossed for an excellent converted try. Midway through the half, following an excellent break from wing-forward Conor Fenlon and quick recycling at the breakdown, Maurice Logue crossed under the posts for another converted try.

Centre Colm O Corcora added the conversions on both occasions as well as a penalty before second row John Turner crossed for the final score of the half to give Wanderers an impressive 22-0 lead at the break.

In the second period the Wanderers pack kept the pressure on and exciting young winger Josh Healy was quick off the marks to score two excellent tries. Colm O Corcora added the points along with another two penalties to keep the pressure on in pursuit of the important bonus point.

Arklow managed to gain a consolation score before the conclusion of the game but the contest was completed by out-half Robbie Casey who scored an excellent individual try to conclude the scoring at 47-7 to Wanderers.

The most important outcome of the weekend's fixture was the fact that the gap at the top of the table has closed to one point with an even number of fixtures remaining. The league at this stage is down to two teams with Wanderers in an excellent position to challenge for the title.

The performance of the team was impressive with the forwards, especially the try scorers Fenlon and Turner, in outstanding form.

The next outing is a home fixture on Sunday against league newcomers Ratoath at 2.30 p.m. Sign up to the club newsletter for details of this and other events.
