Strong Enniscorthy recovery

The final score in this Leinster League Division 1A match never looked on after the opening 30 minutes in which visitors Monkstown had dominated, leading 11-0.

Enniscorthy were simply awful and could not do anything right. Cilian McDonagh kicked two penalties and hooker Barry Stephenson scored a try. He missed the conversion and also hit the post with a penalty kick so it should have been worse.

Enniscorthy eventually made the breakthrough just before half-time when wingers Paul Bolger and Ivan Jacob combined for a try, with the latter touching down. Ivan Poole missed the conversion.

There were obviously some harsh words uttered at half-time, and right from the kick-off Enniscorthy won a penalty which Ivan Poole slotted.

They were hungry now and both Declan O'Brien and Thomas Stamp were immense. O'Brien's tenacity and well-executed pass sent Ross Barbour flying through for the second try and the lead for the first time (13-11).

Enniscorthy won a superb maul and Paul Bolger scored the third five-pointer after really good work by Paddy Waters.

Monkstown re-organised and they exerted sustained pressure on Enniscorthy's defence, but eventually it broke down when Ross Barbour put in a superb tackle which he had done all day.

Ivan Jacob booted the ball low up close to the right wing and won the race to kick it through again from outside the '22 to score the fourth and crucial try for the bonus point.

Poole added the conversion with a superb kick from the sideline.

Killian Lett scored the fifth after a Paul Bolger tackle on Brian Flaherty, with the ball spinning to Lett and the captain making no mistake. Again Poole added a superb conversion from the sideline.

It was an emphatic victory at the end which was a result of a real injection of pace in their play in the second-half. It was a good win and it keeps them on the toes of Dundalk at the top of the table.

Declan O'Brien, Thomas Stamp, Timmy Morrissey and Seán Wall when introduced were the pick of the forwards, with Killian Lett, Danny Pim and Ross Barbour best of the backs.

Enniscorthy are away to Cill Dara this Saturday at 2.30 p.m.
