A new art exhibition was opened at Gorey library yesterday (Monday).

The exhibition called Penumbra Antumbra is a collection of art work by Maeve Coulter, John Cullen and Kathleen Delaney. The artists tackle themes of the passage of time, loss, death, birth and rebirth.

Penumbra Antumbra comprises of photography, print, painting and sculpture.

In her recent works Maeve Coulter returns to traditional etching on paper. The black and white pared back imagery represents a moment of reflection on vulnerability and loss.  For Coulter the etching process particularly appeals, the controlled erosion of a metal plate, finding the various depths and layers that will yield the level of darkness or light required to express form and feeling.

Inspired by The Four Ages Of Man by WB Yeats, John Cullen has created a series of tableaux in photography. Cullen uses the analogy of the passage of time using the journey of the river from its original source until it inevitably joins the ocean.

Kathleen Delaney is exhibiting earlier works from her collection, engaging in her usual themes of alchemy, the decent into shadow and rebirth. In A Visit To The Gallery the artist references a video work based on Las Meninas by Velázquez. She takes the figure of the child and creates a sculptural form made from chair backs, wire and dark linen embellished with semi precious stones.

The themes employed by the artists are in keeping with the time of year. The show is part of Gorey's initiative to add to the atmosphere of the season. For the visitor to Wexford Festival Opera, it is well worth making the journey out of Wexford town to Gorey

The exhibition runs at The Civic Square Gallery at Gorey's Civic Buildings and Library, The Avenue, Gorey. It is open daily to the public Monday to Saturday 10.30am - 5.30pm with late night opening on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 9 pm. Closed for lunch from 1.00pm to 2.00pm on Mondays and Saturdays. Closed on Saturday of the bank holiday weekend. Admission is free
