Whelan's Pharmacy on St Michael's Road has been named as 'Pharmacy of the Year' at the inaugural Irish Independent Retail Awards, just two weeks after celebrating five successful years in business.

The pharmacy was set up in 2013 by local couple Ed and Veronica Whelan, who currently employ seven staff.

'This award comes just five years after we first opened our doors in August 2013 with just two staff and a bucketful of hope,' said Ed. 'Positive word of mouth has been instrumental in the rapid growth of our family business and for that I am truly indebted to our wonderful staff.'

Ed works as the pharmacist alongside Muireann Redmond, while Veronica looks after the accounts and the social media side of business. This was the first business Ed and Veronica set up together. Before, Ed worked in the Sam McCauley group.

The thriving town of Gorey is something Ed feels has contributed greatly to his business.

Ed and Veronica gave thanks to their loyal customers; Ed's mother Bridget, father Pat and father-in-law Robin; friends; and the people of Gorey for their tremendous support.
