As it approaches its 100th birthday, St Patrick's Snooker Club in Gorey has recently undergone a facelift, and now it wants new members.

The club will hold a pool marathon in Tesco, Gorey, on Saturday, September 30, and chairman Rob Mulhall said they hope to recruit new members by encouraging parents and children to take part on the day. They will also be collecting donations.

'It's a great opportunity for us to become more visible in the community and recruit younger members,' he said. Thanks were sent to Tesco for allowing them to run the event.

Located on the junction of Main Street and the Avenue - or as locals call it, Club Corner - St Patrick's Snooker Club has been part of the fabric of local life since its foundation in 1918. As it prepares to celebrate its centenary year, plans are in progress to mark the occasion.

The club's committee and members have transformed the interior to make it a more comfortable and enjoyable place to spend time. However, much more work is needed. The main roof is in badly in need of repair and there are plans for a fundraising drive over the next year to secure funds for the necessary repairs.

Improvements already carried out include the installation of two brand new championship pool tables which have proven very popular. As well as the snooker and pool facilities, the club also has a new dartboard and oche; satellite sporting events are televised; and free wifi is available.

Regular snooker and pool tournaments are held during the year for members and many players regularly take part in snooker and pool events around Ireland.

The club is open daily from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. for junior members who are supervised by a garda vetted adult, but access is available to senior members (18+) during daytime hours also. The club has recently become garda vetted. Anyone wishing to join as a senior or junior member is welcome to call in, and ask about joining. Coaching sessions for junior members will also soon begin.

'St Patrick's Snooker Club is a fantastic amenity and a great place for young kids and adults to enjoy cue sports in a safe and friendly environment,' said Rob. For more, contact 086 7963531.
