Fáilte Ireland has revealed plans for the construction of a state of the art water sports activity centre in Curracloe.
The announcement was made jointly last week with Minister for Tourism Catherine Martin, with funding of €19m being allocated to water sports facilities at 22 different locations across the country. Fáilte Ireland say that there's been a huge increase in people enjoying outdoor water-based activities such as kayaking, surfing, paddle-boarding and open water swimming and that shower and changing facilities, secure storage and bathrooms at beaches are in huge demand.
The Curracloe Water Sports Activity Centre will be developed in partnership with Wexford County Council and will provide all of the above, as well as being fully wheelchair accessible and built using 'Nearly Zero Energy Building' standards with solar heating panels etc.
Fáilte Ireland is hoping that the investment scheme will support the local economy and the outdoor activity sector 'by significantly enhancing the overall visitor experience, providing new business opportunities in local communities and allowing for the extension of the tourism season beyond the traditional summer months'.
Welcoming the announcement, Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council Cllr Ger Carthy said: 'The new facility in Curracloe will enable a variety of water sports enthusiasts better access to our beaches over a much greater period of the year. As a coastal county we appreciate the value such activities bring to our economy and Wexford County Council supports this innovative measure to enhance the opportunities for business and leisure pursuits in the area. This facility will significantly increase the numbers of visitors coming to Wexford to enjoy water sports at this iconic location'.
