Gorey firefighters were called to the scene of a fire at a vacant semi-detached house on Puddle Lane in Ballycanew last Saturday.

Smoke was seen coming from the windows and doors at around 8 p.m. and the emergency services were contacted.

A spokesperson from Gorey Fire Service said the house has been vacant for a few weeks and no one was inside when they arrived. They found old furniture and mattresses in one of the bedrooms that had been set alight.

The neighbours did not have to be evacuated, however smoke did enter into their attic but emergency personnel cleared it before it could cause any damage.

'Two to three rooms in the semi-detached house have been gutted but the rest is smoke damage,' said the spokesperson. 'It took us two hours to contain the fire.'

Members from Gorey Garda Station, who were notified of the fire, patrolled the area for a few hours after the fire crew were finished.

The house has been vacant since November when a family of nine were evicted from the premises after living there for ten years due to a High Court order for the repossession of the house issued against their landlord in July last year.
