Mary says farewell as post office makes move
It was the end of an era in Ferns on Friday as the post office at Upper Main Street closed its doors for the final time. Postmistress Mary Fortune locked up for the last time on Friday evening and handed over the keys to the post office where she had worked since she was 16 years old.
All services will now move from the post office at Upper Main Street to the Mace shop in the village, starting today (Tuesday) at midday.
Having served as postmistress for 27 years locally, the change is a big one for the village of Ferns and last week people dropped in to wish Mary all the best in her retirement. While she enjoyed her time as postmistress, Mary is equally looking forward to enjoying her retirement.
'Well I'm not really one for getting sentimental,' said Mary. 'It was my own decision and I think that the timing was just right to call it a day. I don't have any major plans for my retirement just yet, I'll just be taking it one day at a time.'
Bernie Whelan and Josephine Byrne, familiar faces alongside Mary, are expected to stay on and man the post office from its new location in Mace.
An Post says that it is hoping to make the transition as seamless as possible and apologises for any inconvenience caused by the move and thank people for their continued support.
