Granting of licence to prospect for gold

Maria Pepper

The Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment has publicly announced its intention to grant a licence to a Dublin-based company to prospect for gold in County Wexford.

The company is Minerex Limited of Dun Laoghaire which has applied for permission to prospect for base metals and gold and silver in a large number of townlands around Enniscorthy, Clonroche, Adamstown, Camolin, Ferns, Camross, Bridgetown, Bree and Rathnure.

Maps showing the exact areas are available to view at Garda Stations in New, Ross, Clonroche, Enniscorthy and Ferns as well as Wexford County Council offices, the Geological Survey of Ireland at Beggar's Bush, Dublin and the Exploration and Mining Division at the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment in Adelaide Road, Dublin to which objections to the granting of the licence can be made.

A prospecting licence entitles the holder to non-invasive exploration for mineral deposits but does not cover the mining of any materials.
