A first meeting has taken place place of a new sub committee, which was established following the public meeting arranged by local election candidate, Jimmy Fleming, on the issue of drugs and substance abuse on Gorey Main street and the surrounding areas.

The meeting included Jimmy Fleming as Chairperson, Sergeant Tom Barrett representing Gorey Garda Station, and has four other members to represent some business people, a social worker and some members of the public who have been affected by the issue.

The overall aim of this sub committee is to encourage more focused work, and raise awareness of efforts being done locally in order to help reduce the drug misuse and anti social behaviour in the town.

Despite not being elected to Wexford County Council and Gorey Municipal District following the recent local elections, missing out by the small margin of 23 votes, Jimmy Fleming says that he hopes to continue working with the sub committee.

'I said I would do this for the people of Gorey and I'll keep at it despite not getting a seat. The committee are very happy and we will hold another meeting within the next month,' he said.

The sub committee has reached out for advice from the Dublin charity Merchants Quay, which works for those who are homeless and suffering from addiction to provide supportive drugs services and advice.

The committee are in waiting in hope, as they have invited representatives to Gorey to discuss what steps members of the public can take next around the issue.

'The biggest part is finding where to go next. There is a lot of work to be done on it but hopefully we can make a difference,' said Jimmy Fleming.
