The service station at Ballyellen will finally open on March 28

Michael Nolan, Chief Executive of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) said that the 'fit-out works at the Gorey Service Area are nearing completion'.

The Circle K run service station which will be the largest Circle K in Europe will be up and running on March 28 with their official opening taking place that day.

The service station is running a fuel offer until 7 p.m. on March 28 where motorists can fill up for 10cent less per litre. There will also be spinning wheel competitions, €2 real hot dogs, 50 per cent off any purchase from the Circle K deli range and other surprises.

The service station has been beset with problems since it was first mooted. Initially there had been several objections from local businesses but a traffic assessment proved the need for the service area on the motor way.

Works got under way in August 2013 and finished in 2015, a year behind schedule. However four years on the doors remain closed at a cost of €20,000 a month. The 24-hour security patrol at the empty building is already after costing over €400,000 in addition to the initial €10 million investment.

Circle K will operate the service station after a protracted tender process and the company began kitting out the building in September 2018 and a recruitment drive began in November 2018 with staff being told the service station would be open before the end of the year.

However this never came to pass and it will now open on March 28.

The state of the art building which has three entrances will also have a forecourt, car park and picnic area.
