WHEN IS UB40 not UB40? When it is Ali Campbell's UB40, that's when.
The organisers of the Strawberry Festival have moved to clarify that the act due to appear in the showgrounds on June 25 is the band led by Ali Campbell, whose voice is heard on all the big hits associated with the group.
The original line-up split in 2008 when the singer set up on his own account and he is very much in demand. His appearance in Enniscorthy will come just a couple of days after playing on the Caribbean island of St. Kitt's and he is due to head straight off for the Continent with his band after headlining on Ross Road.
'As a festival we don't want people believing that they are coming to see a UB40 act without Ali,' stressed impresario Rob Murphy who is responsible for the arrangements. The posters and all other official publicity material for the event carry the name Ali Campbell's UB4O.
Tickets for the appearance of the pop reggae star for the outdoor gig on Slaneyside have gone on sale at €20 each, or €30 for entrance to the VIP enclosure for three nights of the festival. In a move to extend the appeal of the fair to a national audience, the organisers have drawn up a list of acts designed to have wide appeal.
The Coronas are down to play on the Friday of the big weekend, followed on the Saturday by Ali Campbell's UB4O and then Cry Before Dawn with The Saw Doctors on the Sunday.
Rob Murphy was delighted to welcome a full house to Treacy's Hotel for the recent launching of the programme and reported that reaction to the announced line up had been good.
The remaining members of the band continue to tour as UB40 and are due to appear in Navan later in the summer.
