Diarmuid Devereux appointed CEO of Gorey Chamber
Former Wexford GAA County Board chairman Diarmuid Devereux has been appointed as the new CEO of Gorey Chamber.
He takes over from Dick White who held the post for ten years and resigned last month over a policy disagreement with the committee on the future direction of the Chamber.
Mr Devereux (62) will hold the position in a voluntary capacity. A Gorey native, he worked with Telecom Éireann and Eircom for 28 years, and served a five-year term as chairman of Wexford GAA until December 2016.
During this time, he helped greatly improve the local organisation's finances reducing its debts by more than half.
He said he was approached to get involved in Gorey Chamber. 'I'm from Gorey and I love Gorey, and I'm delighted to give something back to the town,' he said.
He will spend the coming weeks getting to know the organisation.
He said he hopes to build on the great work carried out over the past decade by Dick White. 'It's an exciting time for Gorey,' he said. 'The town is at a crossroads with the growing economy.'
He sees the retail and tourism sectors as areas for growth in employment, but is particularly excited by the development of the Hatch Lab at Knockmullen, and believes they need to work very closely with Wexford County Council to develop Gorey as a hub for young tech entrepreneurs and bring more high end jobs to the town.
Chamber president Jim Hughes welcomed Diarmuid on board. 'I think he will be very positive for Gorey,' he said. 'I was delighted when he said he would take it on.'
