Christ Church in Gorey issued a notice last week advising the public that it has not currently sanctioned anyone to do a sponsored slim on its behalf.

Canon Mark Hayden said that a parishioner was approached by a young man in Garden City last Tuesday evening, who said he was collecting money for his mother who was doing a sponsored slim for Christ Church.

The parishioner handed over €5 and saw there were other names written on the sponsorship card with details of donations given.

Canon Hayden posted a notice on the Christ Church Gorey Facebook page advising people that 'there is no one currently raising funds for Christ Church Gorey by sponsored slimming. The only fund raiser sanctioned by the parish at the moment is the upcoming golf classic.'

Canon Hayden said that the matter has been reported to the local gardaí. He added that it may be the case someone had decided to do a sponsored slim for Christ Church, but it hadn't been sanctioned by the Vestry or by Canon Hayden. 'If it was genuine, they should have come to us,' he said. 'People have always been good and supported us, and I wouldn't like anyone to be caught out.

He said genuine collectors will have a letter from the church, and if anyone is in doubt, they can contact Canon Hayden directly.

The golf classic in aid of the Christ Church roof repair fund takes place in Courtown on Friday, September 8.
