Athlete David Gillick special guest at Ballyroebuck NS
RENOWNED Irish athlete, Olympian, and Celebrity Masterchef Ireland winner David Gillick visited Ballyroebuck National School recently to help the pupils raise their Active Flag for the first time.
For the past 18 months, the pupils, teachers, and parents have worked towards the Active Flag, undertaking a wide range of activities. A committee was formed to include two pupils per classroom, as well as parents and teachers, and they were led by Deputy Principal Mairead Byrne.
Warm tributes were paid to Ms. Byrne for all her work in helping the committee achieve its goals. Among the activities were an Active Hour after school each Monday; an Active Week; a sponsored walk at Ballycadden Wind Farm and in Le Chéile Park, Askamore; and more.
All this activity culminated in the Active Flag being awarded to the school, and guest of honour David Gillick who attended the flag raising, praised the pupils for all their work. During his talk to the pupils, he emphasised the importance of sport and healthy lifestyle.
Principal John Roban said that all at the school sent a huge thank you to David for his time and for the positive message he gave to the children.
After the ceremony, David took part in some races with the children and great fun was had by all. 'Everybody in Ballyroebuck NS is very proud at achieving this award for the school,' said John. 'Well done to all as the whole school was involved.'
